From the 7 th to the 10 th century, Arab and Persian trading posts were established along the coast of the present day Somalia/land. By 1920, a British protectorate (Somaliland) and an Italian protectorate (Southern Somalia)
occupied what is now Somalia (Somaliland, Puntland and South Central Zone). The British ruled the entire area after 1941, while Italy returned in 1950 to serve as The British ruled the entire area after 1941, while Italy returned in 1950 to serve as United Nations trustee for its former territory.

In July 1960, the British protectorate (Somaliland) and the Italian protectorate (South Somalia) merged to form the newly independent Republic of Somalia.President Abdirashid Ali Shermaarke was then elected as president and his objective was to promote greater Somalia. He was later assassinated in October 1969, and the army seized power.

In depth: Humanitarian crisis and insecurity in Somalia

The humanitarian situation in Somalia is deteriorating at a profound rate.  Since the start of the year, the number of people in need in Somalia has risen by 77% to 3.25 million or nearly half of Somalia’s population. 

There are four main factors driving the humanitarian crisis in Somalia:

Drought and flooding:  In Central Somalia, a severe drought is deepening and spreading and has led to below normal harvests for many years as many crucial crops have failed to grow.  This has left many rural communities without the livelihoods upon which they depend.

Somalia has been without an effective central government since 1991 when factions overthrew President Said Barre then fought for political and military supremacy.  Since then Somalia has seen 17 years of periodic conflict between rival factions, which has led to massive displacements of people and severe disruptions to the economy.

Major Developments on 11th – 17 September 2008.

The security situation in Somalia, Especially in the capital Mogadishu, is getting more and more precarious.

Continuous confrontations between the TFG/Ethiopian soldiers and Islamist insurgents have escalated since the beginning of the Holy Month of Ramandan. The current insecurity situation is challenging the livelihood situation of the ordinary people due to political power struggle between the opposing groups in the country; it was last Saturday when Alshabab movement in Somalia issued warning notice to the travel agencies and business people on closure of Mogadishu airport after Monday on 16th September 2008.
